Tonsillectomy - Day 1

Ok, I went into this little room and the nurse took my blood pressure, listened to my heart, and gave me my little gown to put on. So, Micci helped me get into the gown, tied it all up for me, and we just waited for the next person to come. It was the anesthesiologist and he had me answer a bunch of questions, put in my IV and wouldn’t believe me that I don’t get motion sickness, seriously, Seriously??? Ok, after him, the Nurse anesthetist came in, re-assured me everything would be fine and then the Dr. Nielsen stopped in and said hi. After that, I had to say my goodbyes to Micci, gave her a big kiss and walked off to the operating room. At that point, the nurse was joking with me about "my wife", which I told her we were only boyfriend/girlfriend, and she laughed and said we looked like a married couple, of course that made me smile!

Now that I'm in the operating room, they had me lay on the table, strapped me in, put a blanket over me, and gave me some pure oxygen to breathe through a mask. At that point the nurse said they would give me a sedative and shortly, i would be knocked out. I was waiting for them to ask me to count backwards, and well the next thing I know, is I’m being woken up in a different room. What, the surgery was over all already? Wow, that was quick!

So now i'm in this haze like state, looking all over the room, hoping maybe to see Micci. The nurse asked if I had a pain, and she gaved me some demerol and of course I was feeling great. I knew I just had my tonsils out, but it certainly didnt feel that way. The nurse's kept checking on me, told me to take deep breathes and to relax. After about 15 minutes, she gave me some sprite and a green popicle.

Finally after about like an hour, they wheeled me back to the first room i started in and in walked Micci finally. It was such a relief to see her and her smile! At that point I still had my IV in and had to have the nurse put the bag through my t-shirt so i could put it back on. Micci helped me get the rest of my clothes on and and we were off to the 3rd recovery room. I sat down in a nice recliner, put my feet up and just relaxed there for awhile. I also had Micci call my mom and dad and sister to let them know I was ok.

The nurse came over and gave us all the do's and don'ts, and finally wheeled me out to Micci's car and I was off to go home and rest!

My day was finally over, I had made it, my tonsils are gone, and I have the best girlfriend in the whole world.

Butterflies in my Tummy

Yeah, it's minor surgery, probably pretty routine, but still, there's always that thought that you just might not make it. I know I had the thought, along with hearing stories of someone who knows someone who knows someone who died getting there tonsils out. My boss even had me write down all of my passwords in case something happened to me. Yeah, talk about scary.

However, the night before the surgery, I was pretty calm, I cuddled up with my girlfriend all night long and she even said a prayer before we went to sleep. It was nice to have her be here for me.

I woke up in the morning, the appointment was as 9am, so we got around, i tried to bribe Micci into letting me have some food and water, but of course she said no. I made a few calls, sent a few text messages and was off to the surgical center. We got there, and we're waiting in line and little old lady tried to snake her way in front of me, it was very nice and the lady at the counter was like, this gentlemen was ahead of you. Crazy old ladies, I tell you.

Then it was off to the waiting room, filled out a few forms, the butterflies were pretty intense at this point, but Micci was there holding my hand.

The Pre-Stuff

Ok, So the pre-stuff. I got my ENT to finally let me talk to the surgeon and he had me open my mouth and basically said, "oh my gosh, your tonsils are huge." And he agreed that they needed to come out. I filled out all the forms, and blah blah blah, called his personal nurse and set up my tonsils to be removed on March 28th, 2007.

Tonsil Stones

A tonsil stone is a piece (or more commonly, a cluster) of calcareous matter which forms in the rear of the mouth, in the crevasses of the tonsils.

Tonsil stones, it is theorized, are the result of a combination of any of the following:
-food particles
-dead white blood cells (a.k.a. "leukocytes")
-oral bacteria, possibly from mouth breathing
-overactive salivary glands

They are described as having a pungent odor: Halitosis concentrated into a small solid object. Visually, they may resemble sesame seeds in color and texture.

That's taken basically from Wikipedia and now here's my take on it:

So there called Tonsil stones, but there not real stones. There these little white balls of food particles that get stuck behind your tonsils and basically start to rot and smell. Yeah, I know its gross, but its a cold hard fact and it happens. Ive had them since I was in my teens and always thought I was just different and no body else suffered from these things. Well, I just always used a popicle stick and a flashlight and dug them out. Again, gross i know, but it happens, it causes bad breath, and can just be a nuisance.

But let it be known, alot of people suffer from them, so dont think your alone.

Where it all started

So, Im not much of a blogger but I thought I would make this one specially for my Tonsil Problems and to help maybe educate others looking for some information on Tonsillectomy's.

Ok, when I was a little boy, it never failed, i think every year i developed a case of strep throat and every year the doctor would say, maybe next year we'll remove those tonsils. Well it never happened. I just kept getting strep throat and just kept fighting through them. After the age of like 16, i never got strep again, until this year, when I'm now 27 years old. Starting in January 2007 I got a horrible sore throat and finally went to an ENT to have it checked out, he assumed it was Strep, gave me some anti-botics and i was off, and feeling much better. End of January came and I got another sore throat, just took some over the counter medicine and it got better. Then IN Feburary I got another one, went in, got a strep test and a mono test and they both came back negative. The doctor gave me some Anti-botics or what I like to refer to as horse pills because there so freaking big. After about a week I was feeling better and finally made the decision to get my tonsils out. Now I've been worned about how tough it can be as an adult to have your tonsils out, but i decided it was finally time.

So, I began my journey of getting my tonsils out and this will be a day by day blog of the processs and what i've gone through.
